Major civil aviation crashes with significant fatalities

 

  • Indian Airlines Flight 440 (May 31, 1973): A Boeing 737-200 crashed during its approach to Delhi's Palam Airport after encountering severe weather and striking high-tension wires. 48 of the 65 people on board died.

  • Air India Flight 855 (January 1, 1978): A Boeing 747, named "Emperor Ashoka," plunged into the Arabian Sea shortly after takeoff from Mumbai. All 213 people on board were killed. Instrument failure and pilot disorientation were cited as causes.

  • Air India Flight 403 (June 21, 1982): An Air India Boeing 707 crashed while approaching Bombay airport in heavy monsoon weather. 17 of the 111 people on board died.

  • Air India Flight 182 (June 23, 1985): While not within Indian airspace, this devastating act of terrorism involved an Air India flight from Canada to India. A bomb exploded mid-air off the coast of Ireland, killing all 329 people on board.

  • Indian Airlines Flight 113 (October 19, 1988): A Boeing 737-200 crashed on its approach to Ahmedabad Airport in poor visibility. It struck trees and crashed short of the runway, killing 133 of the 135 people on board.

  • Indian Airlines Flight 605 (February 14, 1990): An Airbus A320 crashed while approaching Bangalore Airport, landing short of the runway due to pilot error. 92 of 146 people on board were killed.

  • Indian Airlines Flight 257 (August 16, 1991): An Indian Airlines Boeing 737 crashed on descent into Imphal due to pilot error, killing all 69 occupants.

  • Indian Airlines Flight 491 (April 26, 1993): A Boeing 737 crashed shortly after takeoff from Aurangabad when it hit a truck on the runway. 55 of the 118 people on board died.

  • Charkhi Dadri Mid-Air Collision (November 12, 1996): This remains the deadliest mid-air collision in aviation history. A Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 747 collided with a Kazakhstan Airlines Ilyushin Il-76 near Charkhi Dadri, Haryana, killing all 349 people on board both aircraft. Miscommunication and ATC lapses were the main factors.

  • Alliance Air Flight 7412 (July 17, 2000): A Boeing 737-200 crashed into a residential area near Patna airport during a go-around attempt, killing 55 people on board and 5 on the ground.

  • Air India Express Flight 812 (May 22, 2010): This flight from Dubai overshot the tabletop runway at Mangalore International Airport and plunged into a gorge. 158 of the 166 people on board died. Pilot error and an unstable approach were cited.

  • Air India Express Flight 1344 (August 7, 2020): A repatriation flight from Dubai skidded off the runway at Kozhikode (Calicut) airport during heavy rain, breaking into two and killing 21 people, including both pilots.
